The Two Sentence Types

Arabic organises all sentences into two distinct patterns, and knowing the difference between them is one of the first real breakthroughs a learner experiences. The first is the nominal sentence, which opens with a noun and is structured around a subject and a predicate. 

The most interesting thing about this sentence type is that Arabic doesn't have a word for "is" or "are." The second is a verbal sentence, which starts with the action, then the person doing the action, and then the object of the action. There is a rhythm for each structure, and students pick up on which one feels natural to them.

Essential Building Blocks

Gender agreement is central to Arabic grammar. Every noun in the language carries either a masculine or feminine classification, and every adjective that describes it must match that classification. 

Definiteness is achieved by a simple but powerful prefix that is added to the front of a noun to change its meaning from general to specific. Gender and definiteness are used in almost every sentence that a learner will ever come across, so it is crucial that he/she has a good grasp of these two principles at an early stage.

Course Curriculum

We've split this Arabic grammar course into five different modules, which start from basic concepts before progressing to more advanced ones.These modules are all built in such a way that each one builds on the others, meaning that every time you attend a class, your level of understanding increases.

Module 1: Arabic Grammar Foundations

Module 2: Pronouns and Cases

The Arabic pronouns have more information than their English equivalents. This module will teach you how to change the pronouns to reflect the gender and number of the person(s) you are referring to. The module then covers the three grammatical cases of Arabic, and you will learn how the ending of a noun changes to indicate that it is the subject, the object, or the object of a preposition.

Module 3: Verbs – The Heart of Arabic

In Arabic, verbs are quite expressive. One verb form conveys the information of tense, gender, and number of persons carrying out the action. This module introduces you to the past tense and the present tense of all verbs and teaches you to form grammatically and naturally structured sentences with verbs.

Module 4: Nouns, Adjectives, and Sentence Structure

This module is based on the interaction between Arabic nouns and adjectives. The rules for the agreement of adjectives with the nouns they qualify will be taught, both in gender and definiteness. The module also includes the various plural forms of Arabic, which are very different from English plurals and need targeted practice.

Module 5: Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Complex Sentences

The final module integrates all the modules. You can identify prepositions that link nouns to the rest of a sentence and conjunctions that join ideas between two or more clauses. At the end of this module, you can write Arabic sentences that are structured beyond the basic level and that are expressive and natural in written and spoken language.
